This $5.3 million project replaced an existing bridge with a 1,100’ long, eight-span cast-in-place prestressed box girder bridge over the Salinas River on new alignment near the town of San Miguel. This replacement project was funded with state seismic retrofit and HBRR funds.
Originally scheduled to be seismically retrofitted, the existing bridge was replaced because it was found (during construction of the retrofit project) to be constructed of concrete containing reactive aggregate, which caused the concrete to begin to decay and to lose its load carrying capacity. As a result, the bridge was reduced to only one lane of traffic while a new bridge was quickly developed and constructed.
Key issues included scour protection, environmental sensitivities, traffic handling, utilities relocation (including incorporation of new water and sewer main), and transferring existing fiber optic telephone and natural gas facilities onto the new bridge.
