1989 LOMA PRIETA EARTHQUAKE

October 17, 2019

Thirty years ago, the Loma Prieta Earthquake rocked the Bay Area. Today, we look back on that moment in time with photos that our own Mark Reno acquired in 1989 while working for Caltrans. Even though Mark was just two years into his career, he was one of the first responding engineers charged with heading up portions of the search and recovery effort in Oakland, California, at the I-880 Cypress Freeway. Mark worked closely with contractors, fire and rescue crews, and the California Highway Patrol to stabilize the damaged freeway and locate and extract survivors and victims following the freeway collapse.
